Tips for job seekers

Here are some tips that will help your hunt for a new job go smoothly…

Be vulnerable –  it’s okay to ask questions! It’s the best way to build relationships with people whom you’d like to work with/for.

Challenge conventional wisdom –  “Follow your passion” is one of the most common pieces of career wisdom, if you study people who end up loving their work, most of them did not follow a pre-existing passion, instead their passion for work developed over time as they got better at what they did and got better over their career. But at the same time, don’t stay miserable!

Create your position –  Don’t just sit around and wait for your dream job, study the industry your looking to move into, figure out their challenges through relationships or public information, and find a solution for them that you can share. The concept here is to get noticed by offering your help to the solution, which shows what you can bring to the industry.

Learn how to listen –  The art of conversation lies in knowing how to listen, know when to talk, when to stop talking and when to ask questions.

Build relationships –  Eventually you’ll want to build strategic relationships with people at all levels, this will help get you known, and show that you’re not one to hide in the shadows, show you are confident and can build connections.

Found a decent job? Don’t apply straight away! – The first thing anyone does when they find a job they want to go for, is applying. And 80% of the time the job is not always what you thought it would be. So, before applying always remember to research the company/industry. Remember to ask questions, via phone, email etc. Or do your research.  do you know the location, role, salary etc?

Don’t focus on finding a job you love now –  Look at what the job would be like in five years. Can you move up positions over time by working here? Will it build your skills to move on to prepare you for future jobs? You have your whole life, don’t rush it.
